Bangaan rice terraces is just one of the five sites that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. Bangaan rice terraces and Batad rice terraces are both in Banaue, which is a 4th class municipality in the province of Ifugao, Philippines. Three other sites are Mayoyao Rice Terraces (in Mayoyao), Hungduan Rice Terraces (in Hungduan) and Nagacadan Rice Terraces (in Kiangan), all in the Ifugao Province, the Philippines.
It was impressively built 2000 years ago and passed on from generation to the next. It was also built on steeper surfaces than many other terraces. Generally, the Ifugao complex of brick stone was carefully carved by the early Ifugaos with the natural layers of hills and mountains to make an alley of terraces and pond fields, added with the development of a delicate irrigation systems. Evidently, the villagers here are familiar with the concept of rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting just so you know is the accumulating and storing of rainwater.
HOW TO GET TO BANAUE
From Manila, Banaue is 333 kms. North along Maharlika Highway which passes through the provinces of Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Cabanatuan and San Jose cities. There are air conditioned buses from Manila going directly to Banaue. Ohayami trans is a bus line that operates a route from Manila- Banaue (v.v). Most of its employees are Ifugaos, promoting local employment. It is lso a cheaper shipping alternative for Ifugaos to ship their products to Manila. One can have a comfortable ride and a good sleep when you travel at night. When you arrive in the morning after approximately nine hour travel time and intermittent sleep, one will be welcomed by the stunning view of the rice terraces.
